Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the Summit Block of Oakville Ranch could be some of the most sought after and finest grapes grown in the world. We have been making wine from these vines for nearly a decade, and the results are always spectacular. The wine from 2013 may be among the most impressive yet in terms of density and aromatic intensity. While it’s not possible every year, this vintage we were able to coferment the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, as both varieties were in sync, and at their peak, on the same day of harvest. This technique allows all of the aromatic and textural layers present in the wine to be knit together in dramatic fashion. When the wine went to barrel, the blend was already finished, and as it aged, it blossomed in terms of complexity and polish. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, it maintains a structure and brightness, and a dark but vivid blue-purple hue, that will certainly be persistent as the wine ages. Aromatically intense, the wine shows essences of huckleberries, nutmeg, kirsch, exotic wood, and pie crust. Structurally, it is highly extracted and muscular, but with a sheen, breadth, and length that makes this vintage accessible even in its youth. Its lingering finish brings hints of raspberry, red tobacco, cigar box, and graphite.
